Why Has the Symbol of the Cross Become So Popular for Western Jewelry?

Published by Lisa Anthony

February 2010

In all forms of fashion, textures, and colors, the symbol of the Cross has become the most sought after look for women’s western jewelry and boot accessories.  Anything with a cross in the design gets instant attention. So why is this? Why now? What’s the rage all about?

First, there is certainly no question about the recognizable virtue of this symbol that has been around for over 2000 years. There is also no dispute about what the symbol ultimately represents in our religious history. The representation transcends most religious beliefs.

Wikipedia defines the history of the cross symbol like this:  It is not known when the first cross image was made; after circles, crosses are one of the first symbols drawn by children of all cultures. There are many cross-shaped incisions in European cult caves, dating back to the earliest stages of human cultural development in the stone age. Like other symbols from this period, their use continued in the Celtic and Germanic cultures in Europe. For example, celtic coins minted many centuries before the Christian era may have an entire side showing this type of cross, sometimes with the cardinal points marked by concave depressions in the same style as in stone age carvings. Other coins may be showing the cross held by a rider on a horse and springing a fern leaf, sometimes identified as a Tree of Life symbol.

So why is the cross, in many forms, getting more popular than ever for western jewelry or jewelry in general?  I would argue that maybe we have run out of our zest for superficial symbols.  Whether it is symbols for our hobbies, wealth, or other designations. Maybe we are longing to return to simplicity.  An argument can also be made for our needs of comfort and protection in these troubling times. More than any other symbol, the cross represents a higher purpose and an overall feeling of protection. It also makes a statement about the wearer. That statement can be a reflection on a persons beliefs and their commitment. It can also speak to that person’s attitude not to be apologetic for their beliefs.

I say hallelujah to this trend. This author thinks it’s great that such a worthy symbol of sacrifice, hope, and universal sign of common good can rise to the top.  Even with our younger population, the symbol of the cross continues to gain popularity. Not all youth may understand the significance of the symbol. Perhaps they engage in wearing it just for the popularity.  Whatever the reason, I can’t think of a better form of symbolism to become popular even if it is by accident.  It’s thrilling to see this symbol grow as a part of our modern couture.

Our western culture here in the United States has always been built on a good relationship with God and a return to the simple things in life. It is no surprise that the cross symbol is gaining more popularity every day. We see this trend in our sales at KickBoot Western consistently. It is a pleasure to serve this trend with some of our boot accessories, western wear, and western jewelry offerings that are centered on the cross symbol.

Women’s Western Boot Anklet Bracelets are Hot Now

Published by Lisa Anthony

January, 2010

I never like to be too self serving in my article posts. I always try to keep my readers abreast of the latest trends in women’s and men’s western boot accessories and western wear accessories. Sometimes a trend I see via sales on certain items is so exciting, I need to share it. This past holiday season had me hopping fulfilling orders, but the items I found us shipping the most were boot bracelets.  That trend has continued even into January.
Why have boot anklet bracelets gained popularity?  I have found a couple key reasons.   First, boot wear overall is very popular this year.  This includes western boots and fashion boots. Boots are stylish, spicy, and more popular than ever before. Second, women are looking for more ways to “kick their boots up a notch”.  Boots are ever more expensive and it makes great sense to buy plain boots that can be versatile with many outfits. Sometimes you want to add something to those boots. Straps or chains are sometimes too much and are certainly more casual.  A great boot bracelet can provide some attraction to your boots, and make them more stylish. This can certainly be classified sometimes as “cowgirl bling”, but what I am finding is most women just like the added style a great boot anklet bracelet can provide.  Third, anklet bracelets have been popular for years. Wearing them on the outside of your boots is a natural extension.  Despite the popularity of both, there are some key differences between regular anklet bracelets and boot anklet bracelets.
Boot bracelets need to be made heavier than regular ankle bracelets. Make sure if you intend to buy a boot ankle bracelet it is a bracelet made specifically for boots, not just for your bare ankles.  The proper weighting is critical to insure the bracelet lays correctly on the leather or suede when you are walking or even dancing.  This weighting applies to both the bracelet, and the chain extender.  The extender and the ability to adjust the length is critical.  There are many different sizes and styles of boots. You need a bracelet that will adjust to your type of boot.  Most boot bracelets are 11.5 inches to 12 inches in length with a 2 inch extender. Many of the extenders come with an additional weighted charm on the end to create the correct “laying” effect.  Some of these bracelets have charms “dangling” from them, while others have the charms integrated into the chain itself.  Either type makes for a great looking addition to your boots.  One word of advice I would offer to anyone buying boot anklet bracelets or ankle bracelets in general.  Don’t overspend for something to go on your ankles. Your chances of losing it are much greater than a wrist bracelet or necklace. That’s just the facts. It should not change your passion for wearing them, but be reasonable. The best price range for some very nice fashion boot bracelets is from $20 to $75.  Keep in mind also, your boot anklet or bare ankle bracelets will get great looks, but nobody is going to get down on the ground and look closely at them! Even sitting with your legs crossed is not going to attract close up scrutiny as it relates to how much you paid.
The final question about boot bracelets I get more than any other. Should I wear a bracelet on either boots, or just one?  The answer is “it’s your preference”. Having said that, most people prefer to wear a single, just like wearing a regular bracelet on your bare ankles or wrist. If you want something on both boots, then I recommend going with boot chains or straps.  Lastly, boot bracelets are a nice compliment to toe tips or heel guards.  Many times chains or straps can be too much with toe tips and heel guards.  Have fun and look great!
